Audi Q5 45 TFSI S Line: Premium SUV Tested for South African Reality
We spend two weeks with Audi's mid-size luxury SUV — does the four-ring premium justify the price in SA?

The Audi Q5''s strongest characteristic is consistency. Open the door of a Q5 and the interior quality immediately conveys that the R1,099,900 has been spent wisely — soft-touch surfaces, aluminium trim inserts and Audi''s Virtual Cockpit create an environment that feels genuinely premium.
The 45 TFSI designation indicates a 2.0-litre turbopetrol producing 180kW and 370Nm. Audi''s quattro AWD system distributes power between axles constantly rather than only on slip — it''s a more capable system for daily driving than the on-demand AWD of some rivals.
Our test route from Cape Town to Franschhoek via the R45 provided a scenic backdrop for evaluating the Q5''s dynamics. The S Line suspension tune is firm for maximum Cape Town pothole-testing — it manages imperfections without discomfort but isn''t as forgiving as Mercedes'' more luxury-biased setup.
The MMI Touch Response infotainment system with two touchscreens (10.1-inch upper, 8.6-inch lower climate control) is divisive — some find dual touchscreens intuitive, others find the physical button absence frustrating in a moving vehicle. Wireless Apple CarPlay is standard.
Compared directly to the BMW X3 xDrive30i at R979,900 (R120,000 less): the Q5 has a marginally better interior, the X3 has a sportier drive and better straight-line performance. Either is an excellent choice.
The R1,099,900 Q5 45 TFSI S Line is a difficult vehicle to dislike — it does everything with competence and flair. For buyers who must have the four-ring badge, it delivers entirely.
