Mazda''s CX-5 is one of South Africa''s most underrated vehicles. In a market dominated by Haval, Toyota and Volkswagen headlines, the CX-5 quietly delivers an ownership experience that rivals struggle to match. After four months and 16,000km in the 2.2-litre turbodiesel AWD variant, here''s what stands out. **The Engine** Mazda''s SkyActiv-D 2.2 turbodiesel is a masterpiece of refined engineering. In the Dynamic trim, it produces 140kW and 450Nm — more than adequate for its 1,640kg kerb weight. At 1,500rpm on the highway, the engine is nearly inaudible. Fuel consumption over our 16,000km average: 6.1L/100km — exceptional for an AWD diesel SUV of this size. **The Chassis** Mazda''s Jinba Ittai (horse and rider as one) philosophy manifests in the CX-5''s handling character. It''s not sporty — but it''s precise, faithful and confidence-inspiring in a way that heavier, more electronically managed SUVs aren''t. Body roll is well-controlled; the steering weights up naturally. **Interior Quality** This is where the CX-5 surprises. At R699,900, the Dynamic AWD''s interior quality — stitched leather, soft-touch surfaces, well-crafted switches — competes with premium brands at R200,000 more. The traditional central display (not a touchscreen when driving — only controllable via the rotary commander) is more ergonomically sound than most rivals. **Reliability** Zero issues over four months. No warning lights. Services are straightforward — annual service at 15,000km cost R3,100 at the local Mazda dealer. Parts availability is good throughout South Africa. The CX-5 doesn''t win comparison tests because it doesn''t lead in any single category. But it finishes second or third in every category — making it the most consistently excellent SUV in South Africa under R700,000.
