The current W206 Mercedes-Benz C-Class is an extraordinary piece of engineering. Taking design cues from the flagship S-Class and applying them to the entry-level of the Mercedes range, the result is a car that feels several classes above its price point. The 2.0-litre turbodiesel in the C 220 d produces 147kW and 440Nm — figures that deliver 0-100km/h in 6.4 seconds and real-world fuel consumption of approximately 6.8L/100km on mixed roads. For an executive car of this capability, those numbers represent excellent value. The AMG Line exterior package adds a distinctive front bumper with large air intakes, 19-inch alloy wheels with a double-spoke design, AMG-specific side sills and a boot spoiler. The difference in presence versus the standard C-Class is significant — this trim looks properly sporty. Inside, the MBUX Hyperscreen experience (a single piece of curved glass spanning the entire dashboard from driver to passenger) creates an interior that feels genuinely futuristic. The 11.9-inch portrait central display controls climate, audio and navigation with exceptional precision. Mercedes' augmented reality navigation — which overlays directional arrows onto a camera view of the actual road ahead — is the most intuitive navigation system we've used. AMG-style sports seats with heating and ventilation provide excellent lumbar support for long journeys. Rear passenger space is adequate for adults; boot capacity of 455L is class-competitive. The South African-spec C-Class comes with a 2-year/unlimited kilometre maintenance plan included, providing additional peace of mind. At R1,099,900, the C 220 d AMG Line represents the sweet spot in the C-Class range — the combination of diesel economy, AMG styling and MBUX technology makes it compelling in the executive segment.
