The GR86 is a throwback — and a revelation. In an era of turbocharged engines, heavy SUVs and electronics managing everything, the GR86''s naturally-aspirated 2.4, rear-wheel drive and mechanical limited-slip differential feel genuinely special. At Kyalami on our track day, the GR86 encouraged proper driving technique rather than relying on computers to fix mistakes. The 174kW at 7,400rpm is addictive.
The Verdict
The most entertaining car available in South Africa under R1 million. Not the fastest, not the most practical, not the most comfortable — but the most rewarding to drive. Buy with the manual for maximum engagement; the auto is also excellent.
