Kia's fifth-generation Sportage is a bold statement. The "Opposites United" design language — an angular, aggressive exterior with a curved, tech-focused interior — divides opinion. Some love it; others find it too dramatic. After six months of daily use across Johannesburg, Cape Town and the Garden Route, we have a clear verdict.
What surprised us most was the GT-Line trim's driving character. The 1.6-litre turbopetrol engine produces a healthy 132kW and 265Nm — enough to make the Sportage genuinely lively in urban and highway conditions. The 7-speed DCT gearbox is generally smooth, though it occasionally hesitates on slow-speed manoeuvring.
The interior technology ages well. Kia's 12.3-inch digital cluster and 12.3-inch infotainment display — presented as a single curved widescreen unit — remains one of the most impressive interiors in its price class. Wireless Apple CarPlay worked without fail over six months; a achievement that sounds small but isn't.
Build quality held up well. No rattles developed. The panoramic sunroof remained rattle-free. Door gaps stayed consistent. These might seem like basic expectations but they've tripped up some Korean and Chinese competitors.
Fuel consumption averaged 8.2L/100km over our 18,000km — marginally above the claimed 7.5L/100km but within acceptable real-world variance given our test included high-altitude mountain driving.
Service at 15,000km cost R4,200 at our local Kia dealer — reasonable for a turbocharged engine. The 5-year/150,000km warranty backed by Kia's local dealer network continues to be a genuine differentiator.
**Six-Month Verdict:** The Sportage GT-Line is an excellent family SUV that has aged well in daily use. The bold styling grows on you; the technology stays fresh. Recommended.
