Hyundai''s Tucson has always been a compelling option in South Africa''s competitive mid-size SUV segment. The introduction of a 1.6T plug-free hybrid powertrain with AWD capability creates an even more interesting proposition. The hybrid system combines a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine with a 44.2kW electric motor and a 1.49kWh lithium-ion battery to produce a combined output of 169kW and 350Nm — directed through an intelligent AWD system. In practice, this means: - Effortless acceleration from low speeds (electric motor''s instant torque) - AWD for wet and slippery conditions - 5.8L/100km real-world fuel consumption (our test result across Cape Town mixed driving) The hybrid system doesn''t require charging — energy is recovered through regenerative braking. In city traffic, the system frequently switches to electric-only drive for short periods, particularly at speeds below 40km/h and on light throttle. The Tucson''s interior is spacious and well-designed. Hyundai''s dual 10.25-inch screens (driver display + infotainment) create a premium feel without copying the oversized screens becoming common across the industry. Rear legroom is excellent — genuinely adult-comfortable with the front seat in a 180cm driver''s position. At R699,900, the Tucson Hybrid AWD is priced against the Toyota RAV4 Hybrid. The Toyota has the reliability reputation; the Hyundai offers more interior space and a more modern interior. Both are excellent choices — preference comes down to brand loyalty.
